Don’t litter! Let me get on my soapbox for a minute here…in 3 weeks of walking desert tortoise surveys, we have found over 4x as many balloons as tortoises. We make light of our trash finds by decorating our apartment with them, but it’s really pretty sad.
These balloons (and all other man-made materials) stick around FOREVER in the desert, because of the low moisture and sparse ground cover, everything just bakes in the sun without getting decomposed. Aside from balloons, we find tvs, mattresses, and any other kind of trash you can imagine. Balloons that get released come back to earth eventually, and countless species are harmed by choking or becoming entangled in this trash. While I’m at it-rice, doves, butterflies and pretty much anything else released as part of a ceremony have the same impacts on the environment! I have to believe that the younger generations were brought up knowing that littering like this is unacceptable, but just in case I figured I’d rant. Don’t pollute.

Thanks for the reminder :) and creative messaging you got there… maybe you could work with the artist community to make a big art event based on this?
