Road Trip Season

Summer is here! What better way to spend summer vacation than by road tripping to points unknown? In today’s economy, road trips are an economical alternative to costly flights to exotic destinations (but just as adventurous and fun!).

Even though we’ve heard it a million times, following some basic tips can really save on gas consumption during your summer road-tripping. Hopefully you’re already driving something small and economical, but driving optimally can help any type of vehicle.

After working out west, returning to the east coast, and taking some time to visit family, I’ve been trying to be as conscientious as possible of my gas useage. Turns out, these boring gas-saving tips really work. I noticed a huge change in gas consumption by sticking to around 65mph (it’s summer, why rush?). On the routine 4 hour/220 mile trip to visit family, I saved up to 1/4 tank of gas by using cruise control and staying around 65mph. In my car (a small hatchback) that’s about $10 in savings on a 4 hour trip - imagine how that adds up!

The savings really add up if you keep these tips in mind during every day driving - help reduce oil consumption and auto pollution by slowing down, and enjoy the benefits of extra cash in your wallet too. Of course, using public transportation is another alternative if it’s available in your area. So:

  • Most cars get optimum mpg at speeds between 60-65mph - test it out on your car - I’ve really enjoyed being nerdy and keeping track of thisĀ
  • Accelerate and decelerate gradually - stomping the pedals wastes more gas and generates more wear and tear on your car
  • Keep tires properly inflated
  • Reduce the junk in your trunk - excess weight lowers fuel efficiency

Happy road tripping!
